赤花 Akabana

Akabana

Akabana (アカバナ) literally means "red flower" in the Okinawan language (in japanese too) and in Japan is called Bussouge (ブッソウゲ). It belongs to the hibiscus family. There are other types and colors, but the red one is the most popular and has become an unofficial symbol of Okinawa. Searching further it seems to represent "vitality, resilience, and life that continues to bloom even under pressure". Its flowers bloom in summer and autumn and are frequently used as a garden hedge in Okinawa, but apparently people plant it everywhere as an ornament. I have one at home, but I have no pictures of it (ˆᗜˆ).

I named my blog after it because I like red and the name sounded pretty. It also reminds me of "A Cabana" which in Brazilian Portuguese means something like "The Hut/Shack/cabin", and I associate that with warmth and coziness.

There are pictures here.
